Staff Report | Herald Dispatch

BARBOURSVILLE —A public ceremony dedicating the newly-arrived Gold Star Families Memorial Monument will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 30 at Lake William in Barboursville Park.

Sponsored by the Hershel "Woody" Williams Medal of Honor Foundation, the monument will be the first and only erected in Cabell County, Williams' home for many years. Around one dozen monuments have been completed across the country, and dozens more are in the planning stages.

The monument arrived at Barboursville Park on Friday under police and veteran escort.

The Hershel "Woody" Williams Medal of Honor Foundation is a nonprofit founded in 2010 in honor of Medal of Honor recipient Woody Williams. The 93-year-old Williams, of Ona, who was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1945 for his actions against the Japanese on Iwo Jima, has publicly championed the cause of honoring the families of fallen military personnel.
